A hundred sports scholarships and other bursaries were presented to students at UCC this week, with a diverse range of sports honoured in a reflection of the successes the university’s teams enjoyed during 2011 in a diversity of sports, ranging from rowing to soccer, basketball to showjumping and golf to sailing.
Among the notable achievements of the past year were the successes of the UCC senior Gaelic footballers in the 2011 Sigerson Cup, Cork County Championship and Munster Championship.
The performances of the student teams in ladies and men’s hockey were also singled out for mention by Con O’Brien, Vice-President for the Student Experience at UCC on Monday evening.
On a poignant note, two UCC sporting heroes were being remembered this year, with the Jason Foley Memorial Scholarship for basketball, in memory of the student who died on his home club’s basketball court of sudden cardiac death syndrome in 2005; and three scholarships being awarded in honour of Jonathan Herlihy who drowned off West Cork in 2006 while attempting to save two other swimmers.
